Magdoline feels guilty, so she goes to her former lover confessing her regret and repentance, but his dignity rises above his love; he refuses her repentance but helps her overcome her financial crisis. Magdoline cannot bear life and commits suicide, and Stephen realizes that his heart still beats with love for her, bidding farewell to life without regret. His last request was to be buried beside his beloved, as if he were saying to fate, ‘If you refuse to unite us in life with our bodies, here we are united in spirit.'”
